Agriculture plays a vital role in food security, poverty reduction and sustainable development. The sector must meet the global food demand while reducing its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. The sector also accounts for 64% of total GHG emissions in the region. The region grapples with the rising temperatures and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events which have severe consequences on ecosystem services and agricultural productivity. These and many more have pushed the Southern African countries to address climate change challenges through targeted research actions.
