Mauritius ranked 2 out of 16 in the benchmark assessment which suggests that it has a robust and mature digital economy which could provide guidance on some best practices. 

Mauritius scored consistently in the top two ranking of all six assessment pillars and surpasses the African and Global median in all pillars.

The Mauritius Government has Encouraged and Enabled Digital Acceleration to Position Itself as an ICT Hub for the Region

Mauritius has a well-developed policy and regulatory environment for ICTs, with much of it harmonized with international standards. It is a good example of best practices for digital transformation.

More attention on tangible innovations and enhancements within the agriculture sector is necessary to stimulate productivity, such as greater digital advisory tools to reduce the knowledge gap. 

21 Innovations were Identified with Digital Procurement the Most Common

The most popular use cases in Mauritius include solutions in digital procurement followed by Agri e-commerce, digital advisory, digital financial services (not exclusively agricultural but serving the agricultural sector stakeholders) and smart farming.

Most innovations in Mauritius are addressing poor access to markets for farmers, and low productivity, or financial exclusion.

The biggest challenge in applying technology is digital literacy skills followed by the challenges of a financially sustainable business model or revenue stream, and farmer uptake and behavior change. 

More Needs to be Done to Support Universities in Providing Digital Agricultural Skills

In Mauritius, the use of intelligent solutions for agribusiness is important to move towards more sustainable and resilient systems in the face of climate change. 

The University of Mauritius integrated the teaching of digital skills and of digital agricultural skills into its syllabi. They possess digital infrastructure but there is a need to boost WIFI and to raise the number of hotspots on campus. 

Resources and budgets must be made available to support the university in implementation of digital skills training, especially regarding the training in high-end agricultural and digital technologies.
