The Southern African region is currently facing a significant resurgence of Foot and Mouth Disease, with outbreaks reported across multiple SADC Member States and nearly half of the region affected. Recent cases in countries such as South Africa and Botswana have triggered widespread concern, as the disease continues to spread despite ongoing containment efforts. The situation has prompted emergency responses, including mass vaccination campaigns, movement restrictions, and the establishment of national and district level command centres to coordinate control measures.
The economic implications of the outbreak are severe. Livestock dependent economies are experiencing major disruptions, including export bans, loss of access to premium markets such as the European Union, and declining productivity. In Botswana alone, significant volumes of beef destined for export remain unsold, while across the region, billions in potential revenue are at risk. These developments underscore the critical importance of safeguarding animal health to protect livelihoods, trade, and food security.
Given the highly contagious nature of Foot and Mouth Disease and its rapid spread through animal movement, contaminated materials, and even airborne transmission, early detection and swift response are essential. Farmers and livestock keepers, particularly those managing cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs, must remain vigilant and familiar with the common symptoms of the disease, including fever, blisters, excessive drooling, lameness, and reduced productivity. Timely identification can significantly reduce transmission and limit the scale of outbreaks.
In response to this evolving situation, CCARDESA has developed an informative flyer to support awareness, early identification, and prevention of Foot and Mouth Disease across the region. The resource provides clear guidance on recognising symptoms, understanding transmission pathways, and implementing practical biosecurity measures to protect livestock and livelihoods. Strengthening farmer knowledge and preparedness remains a key pillar in regional efforts to contain the disease. Stakeholders are encouraged to access and share the flyer widely to enhance awareness and coordinated action. The poster is available in English, French, and Portuguese below, ensuring accessibility across the diverse SADC region and supporting collective efforts to curb the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease.
